Oral Medications
To treat stubborn cases of acne at a systemic level, these may include antibiotics, antiandrogens (contraindicated for men or women pregnant or looking to get pregnant) or as a last resort.
Topical Medications
How conscientiously you follow directions and take care of your skin at home is as important for clearing your acne as what we do here at the Acne Treatment Center. A topical skin care regimen can enhance or accelerate clearing as well as help maintain the results and prevent unsightly hyperpigmentation.
Common Prescription Topicals Include:
- Vitamin A derivatives, also known as retinoids, including Tazorac, Retin-A, Differin, and Avita that help exfoliate by loosening dead skin cells from the surface.
- Topical antibiotics to kill surface bacteria.
- Benzoyl peroxide to kill surface bacteria and lighten hyperpigmentation.
- Azeleic acid such as Azelex to soothe inflammation, lighten hyperpigmentation and kill surface bacteria.
