 May 2007 Issue 11

OUR NEW OFFICE WILL OPEN IN JUNE

Located one block from the spectacular Peninsula Hotel and across the street from the famous Friar’s Club, our new office offers much of the excitement of beautiful Beverly Hills, without all of the congestion.  Situated just outside the heart of Beverly Hills, there is ample street parking and a valet across the street for your convenience.

This office will offer many of the same spa and laser services at the level of quality you’ve come to expect from Dr. Shamban and her associates, such as injectable fillers and Botox, hair removal, deep cleansing facials, waxing, and general dermatology.  Christine Erdmann, F.N.P., along with Dr. Shamban, will head the New Derm Tech Center as well as provide cosmetic laser and injectables.

A nurse since 1997, Christine Erdmann graduated with her Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Family Nurse Practitioner (F.N.P.) certificate in 2002 from Azusa Pacific University. After working with the Laser Institute in Santa Monica since 2001, she will move to the Beverly Hills location along with beloved aesthetician, Melanie Tan.

Dr. Ava Shamban and Dr. Sonia Batra will also keep hours at this location, but the majority of their clinic hours will continue to be at the Laser Institute in Santa Monica.

Ava ShambanQ:  I have heard some skin care products contain human skin cells. Is this true and do they work?

A:  Yes. Some skin care products contain human skin cells as an active ingredient such as BIO-GEL bio-restorative Hydrogel with PSP by NEOCUTIS. The technique used by NEOCUTIS uses cultured human fibroplasts, which are tapped for their rich restorative nutrients.

This process was originally developed to heal wounds and burns without scarring, this hydrogel can bring results in healing wrinkled, sun-damaged skin. NEOCUTIS BIO-GEL also contains hyaluronan, also known as hyaluronic acid, a major component of the war against aging.

SCLEROTHERAPY:
TREAT UNSIGHTLY VEINS IN MINUTES

Spider veins are tiny purple and red blood vessels found most commonly on the thighs or lower legs. They are considered hereditary and can form anywhere on the leg, from the top of the thigh to the ankle. Occasionally, spider veins appear on the face. Varicose veins are larger. They can appear raised with a bluish color and can become quite painful. Although spider veins and varicose veins carry blood, they are not part of the venous valve system. Your spider veins can be reduced significantly through sclerotherapy.

Sclerotherapy was developed in the 1920's. During the procedure, a sclerosing solution is injected into the vein through a micro-needle. The sclerosing solution causes the vein to blanch (turn white), then gradually disappear.

In most cases, about 50-70% of the treated vessels will be gone for good. However, new veins may appear and additional treatments are generally required for optimum results.

ECZEMA/ATOPIC DERMATITIS

EczemaThe terms "eczema" or "dermatitis" are used to describe certain kinds of inflamed skin conditions including allergic contact dermatitis and nummular dermatitis. Eczema can be red, blistering, oozing, scaly, brownish, or thickened and usually itches. Atopic means there is a tendency for excess inflammation of the skin and linings of the nose and lungs. This often runs in families with allergies such as hay fever and asthma, sensitive skin, or a history of atopic dermatitis. Although most people with atopic dermatitis have family members with similar symptoms, 20% of cases are not hereditary conditions. Atopic dermatitis is very common in all parts of the world. It affects about 10% of infants and 3% of the total population in the United States. It can occur at any age, but is most common in infants and young adults. This skin rash can be widespread, or limited to a few areas. Atopic Dermatitis/Eczema frequently improves with adolescence, but many patients are affected throughout life. Generally occurring on the hands and feet, patches can appear anywhere, including the bends of the elbows, backs of knees, ankles, wrists, face, neck, and upper chest. Since the disease does not always follow the same pattern, proper, early, and regular treatment can bring relief and may reduce its severity and duration.
