EXCITING LASER INSTITUTE NEWS

Ava Shamban, M.D.

As we see the mid-point of 2007 come and go, there have already been many exciting new changes for the Laser Institute. We have new employees, new lasers to provide new treatments, a brand new office, and new products from the AVA MD line of skin care.

This is certainly an exciting time for us and hopefully this year has seen many changes to benefit you... our patients, our family, and our single reason for operation.

I'm also excited to announce that AVA MD is having its first trunk show in New York at Henri Bendel for a week starting July 30th.

Metro New Yorkers, I'd love to see you, as well as you out-of-towners. If you're going to be in the city the week of July 30th, please stop by Henri Bendel and see us! Just call 1-877-AVA-DERM and ask for Joyce.

Sincerely,
Ava Shamban, M.D.

Ava Shamban, M.D.

TREATMENT FOR OILY SKIN

Characteristics of oily skin include surface shine, a coarse appearance due to pores and pimples, blackheads and regular break-outs. The causes of oily skin include heredity, hormone levels, pregnancy, birth control pills, cosmetics, and weather sensitivity. Although, The one advantage of oily skin over other skin types is that it ages at a slower rate!

For oily skin, keep your skin very clean, but do limit washing your face to two times daily. Too much washing will stimulate your skin to produce more oil to compensate for the loss of natural oils. Choose carefully when selecting a cleanser. Avoid heavy cleansing creams, harsh soaps, and those containing alcohol. When cleansing, gently massage your face with your fingertips, using an upward and outward motion. Don't rub cleanser vigorously into the skin; it can clog pores. After cleansing, use an oil-free moisturizer to keep the skin supple. Try using a clay or mud clarifying mask at least once a week.

Look for products that include benzyl peroxide, cucumber, and astringents with witch hazel. Drink plenty of water and restrict your intake of sugar and salt. A slight deficiency in vitamin B2 can also contribute to oily skin.

AESTHERA LASER FIGHTS BLACKHEADS AND WHITEHEADS IN BREAK-OUT PRONE SKIN

Safer than other lasers, aesthera uses lower energies allowing for the destruction of targets while protecting surrounding normal tissue. The cosmetic benefits of this laser include the potential clearing of the post-inflammatory after-effect of active acne, evening of pigment for greater skin clarity, reducing erythema (redness) from inflamed lesions, a marked decrease in the amount of oil production, and may even create a decrease in number, interval, and severity of "break-outs." Aesthera treatments are effective on people who don't respond to traditional therapies such as oral antibiotics and topical prescriptions.
